Researchers Observe Increasing Production Attacks on AI Systems Targeting Their Data and Models

Cybersecurity researchers have observed a noticeable rise in targeted attacks against artificial intelligence systems in real production environments, including prompt injection, model inversion, and retrieval pipeline (RAG) poisoning.

Prompt injection attacks aim to embed malicious instructions into model inputs to force them to act contrary to their policies, while model inversion seeks to extract sensitive training data. Meanwhile, retrieval data poisoning inserts misleading information into the knowledge bases relied upon by RAG models.

These attacks are highlighted as the deployment of artificial intelligence applications accelerates across sensitive sectors such as finance, healthcare, and infrastructure, where a successful breach poses a severe risk to data and operations. Researchers warn that many organizations do not yet possess adequate protection frameworks for their intelligent systems.

Major cybersecurity companies are racing to develop specialized solutions to protect AI models, amid rapid growth in the AI security market, which is expected to reach tens of billions of dollars over the coming years.

What do these terms mean?

Prompt Injection: An attack involving hiding malicious instructions in the input text to an AI model to bypass its controls.

Model Inversion: An attack technique aimed at extracting original training data from the deployed model.

RAG Poisoning: Introducing misleading information into the knowledge bases used by the model to answer, thereby corrupting its outputs.
