Google Combines Your Purchases from Multiple Stores into a 'Universal Cart'

Google has launched the "Universal Cart" feature in the United States via its search engine, including AI mode, and the "Gemini" app ahead of the holiday season, according to the company's blog.

The feature enables shoppers to collect products from multiple stores into a single synchronized basket that tracks prices, monitors stock availability, and suggests discount codes, instead of navigating each retailer's website individually.

The cart relies on the "Shopping Graph," which includes more than 60 billion product listings, and the "Universal Commerce Protocol," featuring checkout recommendations powered by Google Wallet. Launch checkout partners include Nike, Walmart, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, and Wayfair, in addition to many merchants on the Shopify platform.

Google states that merchants remain the "Merchant of Record" for the transaction, meaning the sale process and its responsibility remain with the store. This gives shoppers a smoother purchasing experience when buying from US stores.

What do these terms mean?

Universal Cart: A digital shopping basket that collects products from different stores in one place and automatically updates prices and inventory.

Merchant of Record: The party in whose name the sale takes place and who bears responsibility for the order, shipping, and returns, even if the transaction is conducted through an intermediary platform.

Universal Commerce Protocol: A technical standard allowing different systems to seamlessly exchange product, payment, and inventory data.
