Chedraui Launches Retail Media Arm Powered by Data from 14 Million Customers
Mexican group Chedraui launched the 'Chedraui Media' retail advertising network, leveraging data from 14 million loyalty members and 430 million annual transactions, alongside a plan to open 245 stores.

Mexican group Grupo Comercial Chedraui launched the "Chedraui Media" retail advertising network, a high-margin unit relying on first-party data from 14 million loyalty program members to deliver targeted ads based on actual purchases. The unit leverages point-of-sale data collected by the "Mi Chedraui" loyalty program, which tracks consumer purchasing patterns across the store network.
The platform enables advertisers to target consumers based on documented transaction history rather than inferred browsing habits, drawing on 430 million annual transactions. The service operates across four integrated channels: in-store digital screens, affiliated e-commerce sites, off-site digital ad networks, and direct messaging campaigns. It provides tools for audience segmentation, analyzing purchase frequency in specific product categories, and calculating closed-loop attribution for sales and incremental sales across the customer journey.
Rafael Orozco, Director of Marketing, Customer Experience, and Chedraui Media, stated that the tools are designed to help commercial partners optimize their promotional spending. He added that they aim to support more efficient advertising investment, drive conversions, and boost repurchase rates with measurable results defining the impact of each campaign.
The launch of the network coincided with an investment plan worth 7.8 billion Mexican pesos, or about $417 million, over four years to open 245 stores in the State of Mexico and generate roughly 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. The company currently owns 131 stores in the state, with expansion relying primarily on the "Supercito" convenience retail format with spaces ranging between 250 and 300 square meters, an average investment of 8 million pesos per store, and about 18 jobs. This domestic push comes at a time when the company's U.S. stores face pressure, as consolidated sales in the first quarter of 2026 fell by 6.2%, with same-store sales declining 2.8% in the United States and rising 2.1% in Mexico.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Retail Media: Ads sold within a store or its digital platform, using actual purchase data to target customers instead of guesswork.
First-Party Data: Data collected directly by a store from its customers, such as loyalty and transaction history, making it more accurate and easier to use than third-party data.
Closed-Loop Attribution: Linking the ad viewed by a customer to the purchase they subsequently completed, allowing the measurement of impact on sales.
Incremental Sales: Sales generated as a result of an advertising campaign that would not have occurred without it, typically measured by comparing an ad-exposed group to an unexposed one.
