Britain Imposes Sanctions on 15 Commanders from Both Sides of War in Sudan

The United Kingdom has imposed travel bans and asset freezes on 15 senior commanders and officials from the Rapid Support Forces, the Sudanese army, and allied factions, according to The National newspaper.

London stated that the sanctions are linked to conflict-related sexual violence and attacks on civilians. Targeted individuals include Rapid Support Forces Colonel Hussein Abu Jalq and Sudanese Army Brigadier General Ahmed Haj Barir Ahmed.

At the same time, Britain announced a £15 million aid package, including £5 million for victims of sexual violence and £10 million in humanitarian aid.

The move comes as the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces continues, amidst international pressure on both sides of the conflict.

What do these terms mean?

Travel ban: Preventing the targeted individual from entering or transiting through the territory of the sanctioning state.

Asset freeze: Preventing the individual or entity from disposing of their funds and property within the jurisdiction of the sanctions.

Rapid Support Forces: A Sudanese military force fighting the Sudanese army in the current war.

Conflict-related sexual violence: Sexual abuses committed in the context of armed conflict and used as a weapon against civilians.
